Is a Soil Test Worth It?

The simple answer is: absolutely!

If you’re planning to build a new home, add an extension, or even undertake something like restumping, there’s one step you can’t afford to skip, and that’s soil testing, also known as a Site Classification Report.

While it may seem like just another requirement for council approval or your building permit, this report plays a far bigger role than you might think. Soil testing lays the groundwork, pun intended, for the long-term success and stability of your project.

What Is Site Classification, and Why Does It Matter?

In Australia, Site Classification follows the national standard AS 2870, which governs residential slabs and footings. These classifications are used to determine how a structure should be designed based on the soil’s behaviour beneath it. It’s not just about meeting regulations; it’s about building smart and of course, building safely.

What is a Soil Test For?

A geotechnical assessment is carried out to identify the type of soil on your site and how it reacts to environmental changes. This involves us looking at and reporting on:

  • Soil composition – Clay, sand, silt, or combinations thereof
  • Soil reactivity – The degree to which the soil expands or contracts with moisture changes
  • Bearing capacity – How much weight the soil can safely support
  • Site-specific factors – Existing structures, trees, slopes, and any imported fill

So Why Does Soil Behaviour Matter?

Not all soil is created equal. Clay, for instance, is notorious for its reactivity; it swells when wet and shrinks when dry. This constant shifting can wreak havoc on structures that aren’t designed to handle it, leading to cracks, uneven floors, or worse.

A proper Site Classification Report gives your engineer and builder a clear understanding of your soil’s characteristics and behaviour. Armed with the results of the soil test, they can design footings or slab systems that are tailored to the conditions of your block, ensuring durability, stability, and of course, very priceless peace of mind.
